The novel CHEAT depicts high adventure  in the mountains

CHEAT is an adventure tale that takes place in the severe winter of 1976-77 in the Cheat River area, where the author lives.
The books TRILLIUM  ACRES and SNAKE HILL detail the homesteading and outdoor life at some of the same places where the novel is set.

                                  What they say about CHEAT

~ "A book about love for the West Virginia mountains and love between two men who grew up together, sons of coal miners, struggling to make it in a place where the magnificent landscape and an old lifestyle are challenged by industrialization." - Meredith Sue Willis, novelist.
~ "A thrilling adventure story set in the upper Cheat River Country...a far more sympathetic portrayal of mountain life than James Dickey's book and movie, `Deliverance.' " - Ken Sullivan,  executive director of the West Virginia Humanities Council and former  editor of Goldenseal magazine.
~ "It has something of Jack London's sense of the wild earth and the wild life that moves on it." - The late  Ruel Foster, chair of English Benedum professor of American literature at West Virginia University.
~ "Reminiscent of the Zane Grey novels I read as a young man." -  Harry Moats, late recipient of WVU's Order of the Vandalia.
~ "The true flavor of a gripping adventure, an excellent reading experience." - Herb Vallow, The Lewistown, Pa., Sentinel.
~ "Cheat has an excellent plot. West Virginians can almost picture themselves as being involved in the story." - The late Dr. Earl Core, WVU Biology.
~ "It has a lot of suspense. You wanted to get back to it after you had to put it down." - Paul Atkins, WVU journalism.
~ "This puts him (Julian) in the forefront of Appalachian and American fiction writers. It will have an honored place on my bookshelf. It is one of those books I will come back to when I need to read some really good stuff." - Michael Pauley, late president of West Virginia Writers, Inc.
